The Waikato Region is located in the upper part of the North Island of New Zealand and has a population of 431,000. The Waikato has a mild climate with moderate rainfall, with the higher western hills attracting most of the rain.

In early 2019 MTFJ Chairman Mayor Max Baxter and Taskforce Coordinator Noa Woolloff went on a road trip to visit South Island Councils and to hear from the Mayors about the local challenges facing their communities in relation to youth unemployment.

The West Coast region is located on the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand and has a population of around 34,000. The region is one of the most remote and sparsely populated in the country.
